Platteklip Gorge
The Mountain’s Stairway
Platteklip Gorge is the oldest and most direct route to the crown of Cape Town — a timeless zig-zag path carved into the face of Table Mountain. Starting high above the city on Tafelberg Road, the trail wastes no time, rising steadily through stone steps that seem to stretch toward the sky. Exposed to sun and wind, the climb demands grit and rhythm, but every switchback rewards with widening views of ocean and city far below. Reaching the Gorge’s top is like stepping through a gateway: the vast, flat plateau of Table Mountain unfolding in all directions, a world of stone and sky that has drawn climbers for centuries.
What to Expect
Start & Flow
From Tafelberg Road, the trail begins gently but quickly turns into a steady stair-climb directly into the heart of Table Mountain. The path is straightforward but unrelenting, a series of rocky steps winding up the Gorge. Shade is minimal, and the sun can make this climb feel twice as tough — but the directness of the route makes it the fastest way to the top.Turning Points:
Lower Gorge: Early chance to gauge pace and adjust — a good spot to pause for water and sunscreen.
Mid-Gorge: A relentless stair section where many hikers feel the burn — short rests help keep momentum.
Top of the Gorge: Breaking onto the summit plateau feels like stepping onto another world, with sweeping views across Cape Town and the mountain’s flat crown stretching out in all directions.
Descent
We return the same way down the Gorge unless pre-arranged for the cable car (weather and tickets permitting). The descent is steep and demanding on the knees, so careful pacing is essential.

Why We Love It
Platteklip Gorge is the oldest and most iconic route up Table Mountain. Its zig-zag path has carried centuries of climbers to the summit, and while it demands effort, it offers the most accessible foot-route to the top. Watching the city shrink below, feeling the wind sweep across the Gorge, and stepping onto the flat crown of the mountain itself — this is the Cape Town experience. Sunrise, midday, or sunset, Platteklip is the timeless stairway into the sky.
